About the Volume Converter

Volume conversions come up constantly in cooking, shipping, construction and chemistry — a recipe in cups needs to become milliliters, a shipping container's capacity in cubic meters needs to become gallons, a lab measurement in fluid ounces needs to become liters. This tool lets you enter a value once and see it converted to every common volume unit at the same time — metric, US customary and imperial.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the volume value you want to convert.
  2. Select the unit that value is currently in.
  3. The table updates automatically, showing the equivalent value in every other unit.

Conversion Formula

Every volume unit converts through the liter (L). To convert from unit A to unit B:

value_B = value_A × factor_A→L ÷ factor_B→L

All volume units are linear multiples of the liter, so every conversion here is straightforward multiplication or division.

Note: cubic centimeter and milliliter are numerically identical (1 cm³ = 1 mL exactly), but both are listed since each is common in its own context (cm³ in engineering/medicine, mL in cooking/chemistry). US customary units (gallon, quart, pint, cup, fl oz, tbsp, tsp) differ from UK imperial units — only the UK gallon is included here since it's the one most often confused with its US counterpart.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Liters to US Gallons

A 20 L fuel can: 20 ÷ 3.785411784 L/gal ≈ 5.28 US gal.

Example 2 — Cups to Milliliters

A recipe calling for 2 cups: 2 × 236.5882365 mL/cup ≈ 473.18 mL.

Example 3 — Cubic Meters to US Gallons

A 1 m³ water tank: 1,000 L ÷ 3.785411784 L/gal ≈ 264.17 US gal.

Example 4 — US Gallon vs UK Gallon

A car rated at 1 UK gallon: 4.54609 L, which converts to 4.54609 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 1.20 US gal — the UK gallon is about 20% larger than the US gallon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many milliliters are in a liter?
Exactly 1,000 mL. The prefix "milli-" always means one thousandth in the metric system.
How do I convert liters to US gallons?
Divide the liter value by 3.785411784. Equivalently, 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters, so 1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons.
Is a UK gallon the same as a US gallon?
No. A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L, while a US gallon is 3.785411784 L — the UK gallon is about 20% larger. This trips people up constantly when comparing fuel economy figures between the US and UK.
Is 1 cm³ the same as 1 mL?
Yes, exactly. A milliliter is defined as one cubic centimeter, so the two are interchangeable — you'll see cm³ used more in engineering and medicine, and mL more in cooking and chemistry.
How many cups are in a liter?
About 4.227 US cups. Since 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL, 1 L ÷ 236.5882365 mL ≈ 4.227 cups.
