About the Flow Rate Converter

Flow rate specifications span plumbing (GPM on a pump), HVAC (CFM on a fan), industrial process design (m³/h on a pipeline) and lab work (L/min on a peristaltic pump). This tool lets you enter a value once and see it converted to every common flow rate unit at the same time.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the flow rate value you want to convert.
  2. Select the unit that value is currently in.
  3. The table updates automatically, showing the equivalent value in every other unit.

Conversion Formula

Every flow rate unit converts through cubic meters per second (m³/s), the SI unit of volumetric flow rate. To convert from unit A to unit B:

value_B = value_A × factor_A→(m³/s) ÷ factor_B→(m³/s)

All flow rate units here are linear multiples of m³/s, so every conversion is straightforward multiplication or division.

Note: GPM here refers to the US gallon per minute; the UK/imperial GPM is about 20% larger (based on the UK gallon) and is not included in this list to avoid ambiguity.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — GPM to L/min

A pump rated at 10 GPM: 10 × 3.785411784 L ÷ 1 min ≈ 37.85 L/min.

Example 2 — CFM to L/s

An HVAC fan rated at 400 CFM: 400 × 0.028316846592 m³ ÷ 60 s × 1000 ≈ 188.8 L/s.

Example 3 — m³/h to L/min

A pipeline flow of 5 m³/h: 5,000 L ÷ 60 min ≈ 83.33 L/min.

Example 4 — L/min to GPM

A lab pump running at 50 L/min: 50 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 13.21 GPM.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert GPM to L/min?
Multiply by 3.785411784 (the number of liters in a US gallon). So 1 GPM ≈ 3.785 L/min.
What is CFM used for?
Cubic feet per minute (CFM) is the standard unit for airflow in HVAC systems, fans, and air compressors in countries using imperial units.
Is GPM always the US gallon?
Not always — "GPM" is ambiguous between US and UK (imperial) gallons, which differ by about 20%. This converter uses the US gallon, the more commonly intended one in modern usage, but always double-check the source when the stakes are high.
How many liters per minute are in a cubic meter per hour?
1 m³/h = 1,000 L ÷ 60 min ≈ 16.6667 L/min.
Can flow rate be negative?
Yes — a negative flow rate can represent reverse flow or backflow relative to a chosen positive direction (for example, net outflow from a tank vs. inflow). This converter allows negative values for that reason.
